Duntreath Castle Photo Gallery

The estate of Duntreath originally formed part of the earldom of Lennox, but at some time prior to 1364 it was granted to Murdoch, son of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, by his brother Earl Donald. At Murdoch's death, his daughter Isabella succeeded to the estate, but in or before 1434, after the execution of Earl Duncan, James 1 made it over to his brother-in-law, William Edmonstone of Culloden, who had married Lady Mary Stewart, second daughter of King Robert III. The grant, however, was not finally confirmed until 1452, when James II erected the estate into a free barony, the charter then granted being in favour of the younger Sir William in fee and heritage, and in life rent only to his father. It has remained with the Edmonstone family ever since.
